Samuel Carl Adams’s “Quintet with Pillars” was premiered and has been widely performed across the U.S. They have established themselves as important advocates of new music, commissioning dozens of works from composers including Jake Heggie, Cindy Cox, Augusta Read Thomas, Robert Greenberg, Cesar Cano, Tarik O’Regan, Paul Siskind, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Wayne Peterson. The quartet has served since 1989 as Ensemble in Residence of San Francisco Performances and Directors of The Morrison Chamber Music Center Instructional Program at San Francisco State University. The Alexander String Quartet, having just celebrated its 40 th anniversary, has performed in the major music capitals of five continents, securing its standing among the world’s premier ensembles and a major artistic presence in its home base of San Francisco. Naturally it is available in both score and parts.Zakarias Grafilo and Frederick Lifsitz, violin Brahms specialist Katrin Eich has already taken on the task of editing the work for the Brahms Complete Edition and this new Urtext edition provides the best possible musical text for performance. The numerous differences between these two first editions of 1861 continue to present problems to Brahms researchers today. The publisher Simrock was so impressed by it that he accepted Brahms's suggestion that he should publish a score of it alongside the individual parts - something that was by no means usual at the time. As we know from his orchestral music, Brahms reveled in the gutsy strength and soulful expressiveness of the lower instruments. Neither Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) nor his String Sextet No.1 in B flat Major, Op.18 for 2 Violins, 2 Violas and 2 Cellos need any introduction. It was popular with both public and press and has retained this status to the present day. The Sextet in B-flat major was already judged to be “one of the most beautiful works by this young composer” after its initial performances in early 1861.
